  “About three weeks, give or take a day or two,” the deep male voice on the other end of the phone answered. Jayce lifted an eyebrow, well used to this kind of conversation from Ris. An operative for one of the agencies Ryder and Jayce sometimes worked for, he was a seer. A damn good one. Unfortunately, most good seers were in the here and now only en route to the future. Often they answered questions from conversations from next week, or next month.

  “Snap it back, man,” he chuckled, putting Ris on speakerphone. “What you got for us? And, are you sure about this address you sent us?”

  “The Aspen drive one? Yep. The planets are aligned and that kinda shit. Your daddy’s definitely there.”

  Ris’ voice fell serious. “Strictly between us? Something like you guys. Without the taint of divine blood.”

  The seer laughed. “Honey bunch, you have no idea. I’ve got a friend who’s a prince of hell, and just last week I had coffee with the new Grim Reaper. Nice girl, a little scary, but nice.”

  Jayce blinked as he shook his head. “Okay. Mind blown. Did you ring us up just to fuck with our perception of the world, or did you have something specific in mind?”

  “Ah! Yes! I wasn’t joking about the planets being aligned, or rather, in this case, the threads of the past present and future. Vangadr is a god, and thus the normal rules do not apply. Deities, even minor ones like Vangadr, are very difficult to kill, and I rarely get glimpses of their destinies. But on the odd occasion I do. Like now. If you’re going to take him down… You have to do it now. Otherwise, I see him living many more years… And I do not see ongoing threads for you two.”

  The unspoken message hung in the air; kill their dad or die.

  “Thanks for the heads up, Ris.” Ryder spoke, but the sentiment came from both, the telepathic link open wide so their thoughts were as one.

  “Good luck, boys. You’ll need it.” And with that, Ris cut the call.

  Jayce slid a glance sideways, catching Ryder’s gaze. The same strength of purpose that formed through Jayce filled Ryder’s eyes. “Let’s do this.”

  Moving together, they got out of the car to approach the house. Over the last three months they’d learned as much as possible about their divine abilities. As they walked, Jayce heard the birdsong in the trees around them and expanded his senses to the houses that surrounded the one they approached. All around, people went about their Sunday routines—a couple two doors away were having sex while a family in the next house got ready for church, and further along the road, a father beat his son.   The scent of blossoms filled the air, and the gravel crunched under their feet—an outward sign of their presence.   Jayce nodded, leaving big boot prints in the immaculate flowerbed at the front of the house as he moved to the side. A mocking voice brought him up sharp.

  “I wondered how long before you two finally showed up.”

  They both whirled, turning on their heels, to find Vangadr leaning against a post on the veranda, watching them. He hadn’t been there a moment before, but now he was, winking into existence between one moment and the next. He made no effort to conceal his divinity, an almost blinding aura surrounding him and sparkling in the air as he moved. His eyes were azure, the gateway to a soul far beyond most people’s comprehension, and difficult to look at. Even for Ryder and Jayce, shielded by their half- immortal blood. A true mortal would stand no chance.

  “Why?” Jayce demanded. “Are you in a hurry to die?”

  Vangadr’s lips quirked. “No. Just bored. Killing you two will be a pleasant diversion.”

  The two had stopped walking and stalked instead—their prey the “man” on the porch. Jayce worked out the angles; which way Vangadr would bolt if he ran, and where he or Ryder needed to be to stop him. He stepped forward to keep the god’s attention on him while Ryder hung back, his hand moving in a complex sequence hidden behind his back.

  Neither of them were stupid. They’d gotten wise since their last encounter with Vangadr. He was a god, with divine powers and eons of experience using them. But, he was a god with few if any believers anymore and reduced powers. Ryder and Jayce had similar powers. Not enough for an out-and-out power slinging match, but they weren’t convinced of their own superiority like Vangadr. They weren’t too proud to seek help when they needed it.

  “What are you doing?” Vangadr’s gaze snapped from Jayce to Ryder, just as the latter’s lips curved into a wide grin and he finished the casting with a word of power. Not meant for mortal ears, the word would have been soundless to most, but to the three of them it exploded on the air, hanging there like the aftermath of a plucked harp string.

  “Spells? Warden spells?” Vangadr laughed. “You face me with child’s tricks? Really?”

  His laughter faded on the air as both his opponents watched him carefully. If they’d gotten this wrong, all their research and training was for nothing.

Jayce cast first, his hands moving to draw sigils in the air. He reached deep inside. There, buried within was the power he’d always explained away as his wolf. Even now, knowing what he and Ryder were, that part of himself still felt wolf-shaped and he could still shift… but he wasn’t a werewolf, neither of them were. They were something else.

  Something far more powerful.

  A mental nudge and he used that power to fuel the spell-sigils, firing them at speed toward the god bearing on them with murder in his eyes.

  “You’ll fucking pay for that!” he hissed, flicking his hand toward Ryder. As Jayce watched, Ryder was shoved backward, as though Vangadr had pushed him. But he didn’t go far. A look of concentration on his face, he dug in his heels. His boots cut furrows in the neatly mowed lawn as he slowed and then stopped.

  “How?” Vangadr looked puzzled, flicking his hand toward his adversary again, but this time nothing happened. Ryder grinned as he weathered the storm, staying upright and unmoving.

  “That’s not possible,” the god muttered, looking at his aura-wrapped hands as though they held the secret.

  Jayce crept up on his left-hand side, triumph rolling through him as Vangadr ignored him, seemingly more interested in his hand and why his attack on Ryder wasn’t “working.”

  Jayce’s lips moved without sound as he approached, casting another spell, this one far more powerful and complex. For years the two had bummed around, living and working as paranormal bounty hunters, and neither of them had ever applied themselves to learning anything… that wasn’t related to fighting or fucking anyway. But when it had come down to it, and they’d had a reason and burning desire to learn, they hadn’t turned out to be bad students.
